Newark may supply water to county complex

By John Zornow

The Newark Municipal Board met Tuesday evening with representatives from the Wayne County Water Authority to discuss the Wayne County complex on Route 31 East.

What started as a project by the County Board of Supervisors to provide backup water for the complex now appears to be an effort to use Newark as the main water supplier.

The Wayne County Water Authority has offered to construct water lines from the complex to Newark's line after the Municipal Board comes up with a price for water.

The County has been looking for a backup supply of water for the county complex for some time. Water for the complex currently comes from the Lyons water plant. Supervisors are concerned about a situation that would result in an interruption of the supply of water to the complex, which includes the Nye Road complex, County Jail, and the Nursing Home.

Concerns are:

  • How much will Newark charge for water?
  • Will Lyons lose water income?
  • Does Newark have enough surplus water?

Water Authority Chairman Dave Lyon (R-Palmyra) assured Lyons Mayor John Salone that the water line along Rt. 31 was for the betterment of everyone and Municipal Board Chairman San Angelo agreed, saying that Newark was not out to take income away from Lyons. All agreed that supplying water along the Route 31 corridor is a win-win situation for all. San Angelo said that Newark has the water to sell, and the board will decide on a price by the October 14 meeting.

The goal of the Authority is to supply water to most of the county using a transmission grid supplied by various sources including Newark, Monroe County and others.
