Safari will follow the waterways The second in the series of Saturday Safaris sponsored by the Wayne County Historical Society will follow the paths of the two earlier canals east of Lyons. Participants in the October 11 caravan tour will examine relics of both Clinton's Ditch, as the first Erie Canal was derisively called, and the Expanded Erie, its first successor. In the process of replacing these two with what was then called the Barge Canal and is now once more called the Erie, workers left behind structures, pathways, and memories. These will be the objects of the Safari's search. The tour will form at the Wayne County Museum, 21 Butternut St., Lyons, at 10 a.m. It is expected to end about 1 p.m. Although it will travel some of the same roads as the October 4 Safari pursuing county trolley lines, the tour's focus will be on different objects from different times. Society members receive a discount from the low participation fee; for further information call (315) 946-4943.
