By Carolyn Adriaansen (926-4436) Dan and Mary Filibert, of South Main Street, have returned from an 8 day bus tour to Branson, Missouri, where they were entertained with many theater shows. They had a good time and loved the gorgeous scenery in the Ozarks. They were with the Sodus Go Getters along with folks from Sodus, Rochester, Newark and Penfield. George and Carol Reiss of Williamson Road, spent a long weekend with their close friends, Dwight and Jan Mack at Grosse Isle, Michigan, enjoying being together and the reminiscing. DON'T FORGET to go to the American Cancer Society's benefit Haunted Hayride, off Route 21 South in Palmyra, the Armington Road. This is one way that you can contribute to the cancer society and have a marvelous time, too. The Public Library will be closed October 16, for installation of new windows. We will be open for our regular hours all other days of the week. Stan and Isabelle Bushart visited their grandson, Ben Marsh near Chili. Ben is recently home from the hospital following an auto accident. The same day they drove to Medina to visit their uncle, Ken Blackmer who turned 101 in August. Both the Medina and Batavia papers had feature articles on Mr. Blackmer who still lives independently and enjoys going out for meals. There will be a Roast Beef supper at the American Legion Post Home on Witherden Road this eve. October 6, 1917- The Newark and Marion Railroad, which has been closed since March 31, resumed freight traffic October 2. No passengers are yet taken as the coach is undergoing repairs. John Blythe was welcomed at the United Church on October 5, and provided the beautiful music. Congratulations to Richard and Bea Schultz on their 37th Wedding Anniversary on October 1. Do plan to attend the Special Program sponsored by the Marion Historic Association, titled, "They Marched on Richmond." The Author, George Shadman, Jr., will be there to present the program. 7 p.m. "In 1929 grocery stores began marketing prepared baby foods." Gord and I, and daughter Sue, along with lots of other Wayne County folks boarded a bus October 5 and traveled to Frontier Field in Rochester, to walk the five miles in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. John and Eileen Ballesty have had as a house guest, Eileen's sister, Kay St. Leger from Dublin, Ireland. Together the women traveled to California where they visited friends stopping on the way back to Marion in Las Vegas. They had many get-togethers and activities during Kay's month stay in Marion. Bruce and Joyce Bliek hosted the First Annual Owl's Nest Road Picnic on October 4. There were 36 who attended and enjoyed a good time meeting the new folks in the neighborhood on a hay ride, bobbing for apples and playing badminton. Stan and Isabelle Bushart spent a weekend at Houghton College where they attended alumni, men's and women's soccer games. The occasion was a soccer alumni reunion. They stayed at The Inn at Houghton Creek, a new inn, and had an enjoyable time renewing acquaintances and visiting in the area. Sports: Volleyball: September 24 won vs. Sodus at home; September 29 won at NRW; October 1 lost to Clyde-Savannah; Homecoming October 3 Marion won 1st two games; Ahlea Howard was the lone server game one winning 15-0. Williamson took the win. The varsity girls soccer team defeated Lyons 4-0. Carrie Barber notched shut-out number four. Scoring were Amy Fisher (2) and Shannon Gaston (2). The JV girls beat Lyons 1-0. Seventh-grade girls defeated Red Creek 4-0, and the eighth graders defeated Lyons 5-1. The girls A team beat Gananda 5-0. Varsity girls (5-4-1) defeated Gananda 5-1. Fisher had three goals and Sara Haak scored twice. Boys soccer: Varsity was 11-0 after beating a tough Sodus team 4-1. The A boys defeated Sodus 2-1 and the B team won 2-1. Cross Country At the McQuaid Invitational, Rebecca Lewis finished sixth out of 200+ runners. Sophomore Mark Hussey finished 11th in the boys race. The teams met up with Marcus-Whitman; Lewis and Crystal Wheeler did very well, as did Hussey and Chad Taylor. Tennis Marion recently blanked Wayne Central 5-0. Last week, the girls clinched the Wayne County Division 2 title after a 4-1 win at Lyons. Leading were Lesley Bush with an upset win at first singles. The record was 9 and 2.
