NHS football team tops Geneva

The Newark football team captured its second win of the season 31-12 over the Geneva Panthers on October 11 at Newark.

Newark struck early on both sides of the ball when junior Nelson Rivera blocked a punt by the Panthers. Quarterback Tanner Webb took advantage of the miscue and fired a 48-yard touchdown pass to senior Dean Bailey on the Reds first play. Senior Justin Biernbrauer kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. The Reds bounced right back blocking the Panthers' second punt attempt.

Jason Vorie Newark capitalized on a 27-yard field goal by Biernbrauer to make it 10-0.

Jamie Harris made the score 17-0 after intercepting a pass and scampering 55 yards to give the Reds a commanding lead. Newark held that lead after one quarter.

Newark did not score in the second half.

Maurice Streeter added a pair of short touchdown runs in the second half. Biernbrauer was 4 for 4 in extra-point attempts and added a field goal. He also averaged over 40 yards a punt in the game.

Webb was 12 for 21 in passing for 220 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions.

Bailey had five catches for 102 yards with one touchdown. Jason Vorie (pictured) had three catches for 64 yards. Harris had two catches for 36 yards. Streeter had two catches for 18 yards.

Streeter led the Reds in rushing with 31 yards on seven carries Rivera was 2 for 7 yards.

Defensively Harris had 12 tackles with two interceptions one for 52 yards for a score.

Danielle FarkasDuane Garner had ten tackles, two quarterback sacks, two hurries and one interception.

Running back/linebacker Beau Brennan was injured and will probably miss the game tomorrow.

The Reds' task of beating Penn Yan will not be that easy. "They are a much better team than their record indicates," said Coach McGavisk. "They are a very physical team that started the season throwing the ball but converted to a more running attack later on in the year," he added. "The game will be won at the line of scrimmage."
