NHS Varsity tackles Penn Yan The Newark Reds Varsity boys football team ended its regular season on a positive note defeating the Mustangs 9-6 on October 18 at Penn Yan. The 3-4 Reds got on the scoreboard early in the first quarter thanks to a 24-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Webb to Corey Stirpe. The score was set up by a blocked punt by Jamie Harris.
The Reds started on their own 18-yard line and marched downfield with 4:26 remaining to set up a game-winning 32-yard field goal by Justin Bierenbrauer. The winning drive was set up by some fine running by Nelson Rivera. The Mustangs would not die, though and made it to the Reds eight yard line. The Mustangs fumbled the ball and the Reds recovered it for the win. "It was a great team win that allowed us to finish second in the league," said Reds Coach Mike McGavisk. "Penn Yan moved the ball well against us on the ground but we held when we needed to." Defensively Jamie Harris blocked three kicks and had 12 tackles in the game. Rivera had nine tackles and one quarterback sack. Josh Jinks recovered two fumbles, Corey Stirpe had four tackles, one sack and two pass breakups. QB Webb was 7 of 16 in passing for 107 yards with one touchdown pass and no interceptions. Rivera had 18 carries for 66 yards. Harris had three receptions for 27 yards. Vorie had three catches for 56 yards. Stirpe had one catch for a score. Biernbrauer averaged 34.5 yards a punt and kicked the winning field goal with 4:26 remaining. The Reds did not advance to sectional play but will play in a non-sectional pool play beginning with a game against Wilson at Newark Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Wilson is coming off a 35-14 loss to East last week and is currently 2-5 on the year.
