Voters will decide term of office

By John Zornow

A special Arcadia Town Board hearing was conducted on August 28, to discuss a proposal to increase the Supervisor's term of office from two to four years.

The hearing was required, to enable the issue to be put before voters in the November election. If approved, the four-year term would not take effect until January 1, 2000.

Former Arcadia Supervisor Gerald DeBarr spoke in favor of the four-year term. He believes it will be more productive for the incumbent to be working on town and county issues, rather than running for office again.

Arcadia resident Jim Hurley said he is not in favor of the four-year term because, if voters elect a supervisor that turns out to be unacceptable, it would take longer to vote that person out of office.

Councilman Gary Grant spoke in favor of letting the electorate ultimately decide the issue. The board agreed by a vote of 4-1 to put the proposal up before the voters in November. Councilman Mike DeJohn cast the "no" vote.
