Students benefit from L.O. Moose

Jim Batterby said the Loyal Order of the Moose is all about community. Many college Scholarship recipientsgraduates, current students, and soon-to-be college students are helped by the Moose in Palmyra.

Students have received more than $100,000 in scholarships in 12 years.

The program has grown immensely since 1985, when four students were given a total of $750. In 1993, the amount grew to $13,000, with most getting $1,000 scholarships.

But these students aren't the valedictorians from their class or maybe even in their top 10, said Kay Miller, who co-chairs the Moose scholarship committee.

What they do is "the best they can." They are reliable and honest.

The Moose celebrated its $100,000 milestone with a reception for students, parents, friends and family, and Moose leaders.

The dinners were started in 1993 as a way for Moose members to meet the scholarship recipients.

Recipients are chosen from communities of Palmyra Moose members. As the only county Moose location, the Palmyra lodge serves a wide area, including Wayne and Ontario counties.

Current recipients are:

Erin Mangan of Red Jacket High School. She plans to attend Finger Lakes Community College for two years, then transfer to a four year school for speech therapy.
