Wal*Mart supports Hospice The managers of Newark's Wal*Mart store announced last week that the store is contributing $1500 to Genesee Region Home Care's Hospice of Wayne and Seneca Counties, which offers comfort care to patients with life-threatening illnesses, and compassionate support for their families. During the next year Wal-Mart will donate five cents to Hospice for every can of Sam's Choice beverages sold from the vending machine in front of the store, located on Route 31 just east of Newark. Hospice volunteer Eileen Teeter originally approached Wal*Mart managers almost a year ago to ask if they could donate some paper towels to the family of a Hospice patient whose food stamps would not cover that purchase. Wal*Mart support manager Sandy Arnold immediately responded, "Help yourself." Lynn Sperano, an assistant manager at the Newark Wal*Mart, notes that the company's "Commitment to Our Communities" program calls for contributions to local charitable organizations. The Wal*Mart contributions will enable Hospice to care for patients and families who do not have health insurance coverage or the means to pay privately for services. The funds will also be used to support Hospice's volunteer and bereavement services, which are available to the entire community at no charge. For additional information about opportunities to support the programs of Hospice of Wayne and Seneca Counties, call volunteer coordinator Jeanne Chirico at 332-2507.
