Zurich Bog topic of program

Mona Rynearson of Newark will present the history of the Zurich Bog and show slides of its present Zurich Bogday biological wonders at the April 15 meeting of the Colonel William Prescott Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in Newark.

As a quite undisturbed glacial-age formation, the Zurich Bog has drawn national and international scientists for serious study and other visitors for pleasure since the mid-1800's. Both the flora, including 12 native species of orchids, and fauna are indigenous.

The Bergen Swamp Preservation Society that originated in Rochester presently owns about 2000 acres in five New York State sites. The two sites in Wayne County are: part of Zurich Bog containing 414 acres and the Hotchkiss Mint Fields in Lyons, 55 acres. The others are in Genesee and Livingston counties.

The Zurich Bog is a class one wetland and was designated a registered natural landmark by the United States Department of the Interior in 1973 because it "possesses exceptional value as an illustration of the nation's natural heritage and contributes to a better understanding of man's environment" - so reads the plaque on the boulder at the entrance on Arcadia-Zurich-Norris Road, 8.8 miles from Newark's four corners, via Welcher Road.
