Visit the Wallington Schoolhouse

The Wallington Schoolhouse - 1826-1950

The one room School House, Geneva Rd. in Wallington is an experience no student will ever forget. The tour is a great opportunity to see the schoolhouse of yesteryear, similar to the one our School Housegrandparents and great grandparents went to.

Many times it is difficult, when someone tells you about the past, to envision a schoolroom that is different from the one we are used to. By going to the schoolhouse, the students receive a hands-on type of school day.

Every year many students experience the school from the past. The students dress up in olden day clothing they gather from their parents' closets. Many female students wear bonnets and shawls. Some children bring their lunch in a tin bucket.

At the beginning of the tour, the Flag is raised and the Pledge of Allegiance is said. When the students enter the school, boys enter through one door, while the girls enter through a door on the other side. The children's hands are checked for cleanliness. (If a student had been found with dirty hands, he/she would get a harsh rap with a stick and sent outside to wash properly.)

School HouseSome children work in their primers while others are called up front to go over their lessons. The Dunce cap sits in the front of the classroom waiting for a child to answer incorrectly. For example, if, during a Spelling Bee, a child spells the word wrong, it is his or her turn to wear the cap. (Every child, unfortunately, never has to wait long to wear the cap.)

During recess the students line up quietly and leave through their assigned doors. Once outside, the girls play games, such as jump rope, on one side of the building and in another area, the boys play their own type of games. They at no time can play together.

This trip is a great learning experience. The students do everything the children of the past did, right down to using the outhouse. The trip is fun, informative and makes the students appreciate the school of today (with its inside plumbing and computers). - Melissa White
