Roses go on sale Monday

The Newark Rose Committee will be kicking off its annual Mother's Day Rose and Mum Sale on April 20.

This year the Rose Committee will he offering miniature roses and mums for Mother's Day gifts. The Rose Committee uses the proceeds from the flower sale to fund a variety of community activities, including:

Building planters for the roses on the East Ave. bridge with the technology classes at Newark High School

- The purchased 250 rose bushes planted on the East Avenue bridge and around Newark.

- A lighting system to frame the historic canal bridge.

- A 20-foot-diameter Christmas wreath for the bridge.

- An American flag and hanging system for the East Ave. bridge.

- Essay contest featuring Newark. The winning essayists are awarded Rose bushes, plaques, and US savings bonds and the outgoing seniors are awarded $250 career scholarships.

- Rose Day Parade, in which the essay contest winners ride, local bands are featured, and other area organizations march.

The sale forms will be available to teachers and students on April 20; the sale concludes on May 1, when all forms should be returned to the teachers.

Any one who has not placed an order with a child from the Newark schools can call 331-2993 to place an order or to inquire about the products. For sale are miniature Rose plants for $5 and a two-pack of mums for $5. No money shall be collected in advance by students.

Flowers may be picked up at the Arcadia Reformed Church on Wood Lane on May 8 from 3-7 p.m. and on May 9 from 8 until 4. Please pay when the plants are picked-up.
