More $$ for Thruway exit study
By Donna Comella

Wayne County legislators have agreed to contribute to the $80,000 feasibility study for a new Thruway exit.

Over the years, local officials have lobbied for a new exit in Phelps, to serve Route 88 traffic into Newark. Until now, they had been unsuccessful in attempts to secure funding.

Last month, the Genesse Transportation Council agreed to put up half of the $80,000 study cost. The other $40,000 wil be paid for by the following taxpayers:

$15,000 - Ontario County
$15,000 - Wayne County
$2,500 - Village of Newark
$2,500 - Town of Arcadia
$2,500 - Village of Phelps
$2,500 - Town of Phelps

Three citizens spoke out against the move toward a Thruway Exit for Newark/Phelps, stating oppositon toward any further highway development. (Click here to see statement by Roland Miklem of South Butler.)

And although a few supervisors seemed unsure that an exit is needed, all agreed that the study would answer many questions. County Planning Director Sharon Lilla agreed.

"This dialogue provides us a unique opportunity to take a look at what the county will look like in 20 years. The study will address the land-use component and we will have to look at how paving will impact our land - both positively and negatively."
