Pre-schoolers learn to cook

conor.jpg (13096 bytes)Cooking is an important part of the program at Wee Care Christian Pre-school. Students make a variety of nutritious snacks and baked goods by using rebus recipes. Although a few prepared mixes are used, most baking is done "from scratch."

Pictured making cookies are: Lisha Wu, Brandon Morano, Elizabeth Erway, Michael Williams; also Casey Congdon, Conor Fletcher, Nicholas Barrentine, Riley Harding.

Children get experience in measuring, see the value of knowing their numbers, so they'll know how much of each ingredient to add, and learn sequencing skills, as they follow the recipe steps. In addition, they have the joy of creating their own snacks. When children make something themselves, they are more willing to try new foods and become aware of a greater variety of tastes.

In addition to cooking, the Wee Care program includes games, individual playtime, some woodworking projects, creative crafts, a variety of types of painting, some tumbling, Bible stories, and academic preparation for kindergarten.

The craft projects, cooking activities, stories, songs, and games reinforce the letters being taught each week. Children learn, through play activities, to recognize at least the numerals 1-10, identify groups of 10 or less items, and write the numerals. By passing out napkins, finding game pieces, sorting and counting toys, sharing items, and doing cooking activities, students learn the value of recognizing and knowing their numbers.

Finding out about our world, through simple science experiments and field trips, broadens the interests of some students and answers the questions of others. Questions such as "Why don't ducks get wet?" "What makes a rainbow?" "How does a puddle disappear?" are answered through simple experiments.

To be eligible to register for the 1998-99 class, students must be four by December 1, 1998. Tuition is $75 a month for the Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning program. Parents are not required to pay extra fees for field trips or special events, to supply snacks or other supplies, or to assist with supervision of classroom activities. There are a limited number of openings for the 1998-99 school year.

Contact the director and head teacher, Deanna Side, at preschool, 331-8108, or at home, 331-7021. Wee Care is located at 5694 Woodlane, in the Arcadia Reformed Church.
