Hottest fire in 10 years

A barn burned to the ground Wednesday, at 628 Filkins Road, Newark.

Newark firefighters were called in at 9:30 p.m. Fire Chief Jim Murphy said the barn was fully involved blaze11.jpg (5440 bytes)when firemen arrived. They were soon joined at the scene by Marbletown, Fairville and Port Gibson. Relatively new fire hydrants along Filkins Road provided water to help firemen save a nearby house.

Witnesses heard six or seven explosions when a new tractor trailer cab became involved. It and a tent set up for an auction were destroyed. The auction was scheduled for tonight.

Standing by at Newark's hall were Lyons and Phelps volunteers. Firefighters cleared the scene around 11:30 p.m.

Dick Colacino said it was the hottest fire he's seen in 10 years. The property belongs to the M. DeToye family. Investigators were on the scene this morning to determine the cause of the blaze.
