Newark bridge meeting August 7
By John Zornow

traffic jamA meeting scheduled for August 3, to deal with the East Avenue bridge, has been rescheduled for Friday, August 7 at 4 p.m. It will be held in the village courtroom.

The village board needs to meet with Labella Engineers to try to come up with a plan to deal with the overbids received for the bridge project.

Taking into consideration the engineering costs and a built-in 10 percent contingency clause, the bridge bids came in several thousand dollars over the estimates.

The board has delayed dealing with the issue until Mayor Pirelli returns from vacation.

Several residents and supporters of the bridge project, are voicing their concerns that not enough is being done to move the project along.

Local resident and businessman Dick Colacino does not see a need for a delay in dealing with the problem. Says Colacino, "Government should lead by example. If I ran my business like the village runs theirs, I would have been closed long ago. It is obvious that some board members are against the bridge." Colacino criticized Mayor Pirelli, who believes in delegating authority to his managers, but did not want the bridge issue dealt with until he returns from vacation.

Meanwhile, traffic piles up on the North Main Street bridge, creating lines from the light at 31 & 88 to Stuart Ave.
