Fall's on its way
By Melissa White
In our travels out and about, I've noticed a few leaves on the
tips of the trees have changed color already. Today it was closer to home - as I took my
dog outside, I found a small colored leaf on my step.
What is this? Colored leaves in the middle of August?! I am looking forward to the fall
season, the fun of planning the kids' Halloween outfits, thoughts of the kids playing in
the leaves, getting the Haunted barn ready for the Scouts. Cider and donuts, hayrides and
Halloween parties. I even bought big cups the other day, keeping in mind hot cider while
sitting in the yard reading a good mystery.
But, these thoughts are still in the future. We're still into picnics and summertime
parties. (Though I will admit, I'm getting a little tired of hot
dogs and hamburgers.) It seems like just yesterday we were just beginning to oen the
windows to let the spring air in. I just planted the flowers in the garden...It can't be
over yet! After all, it was just one colored leaf. I shouldn't really panic yet...should
I?! I'd better be more appreciative of the beautiful summer day and the picnics - there
may not be that many more left. I'm going to the beach next week with the kids and we're
going to buy a hot dog at the stand. We'll go for nice cool summer walks every morning at
8 and walks at night to enjoy the sound of the birds and crickets.
Come on kids, let's go before any more leaves change.
(Editor's note: It was 48 degrees when I got up this morning, but they say it
will be in the 80's again by the weekend. Enjoy it while you can.)
