Marsha Evans, the executive director of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., was in the Finger Lakes in July in honor of the Seven Lakes Girl Scout Council's wider opportunity, "Women: Then, Now and All Ways." Wider opportunities are events sponsored by Girl Scout councils in the U.S., Girl Guide associations in other countries, and Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. They are Girl Scouting's way of giving Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts a chance to be part of the international community of girls; girls who gather together to have fun, build memories, and test their skills and talents. The local wider opportunity brought girls from 28 states for 10 days of studying women's history; exploring careers and local colleges; attending workshops on self esteem, sports and fitness; visiting museums; and taking part in Celebrate '98, the sesquicentennial of the first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls. After spending two nights with host families, the Girl Scouts resided at Wells College in Aurora for the remainder of their stay in the Finger Lakes area. Cindy Seavert, Holly Cosentino, Sherry Crawford, and Cheryl Morse (all active in Newark Girl Scouting) were host families for the two-night stay. The girls were Megan Dickman of Texas, Bridgette Mayhan of Arkansas, Kelsi Buntin of Oklahoma and Katie Wilkinson, also of Texas. While here, the girls enjoyed a picnic and boating at a cottage on Canandaigua Lake, took a trip to Niagara Falls, rode on the Maid of the Mist, and met 30 other Girl Scouts from Wayne County for lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe. At the end of their stay, their host families drove them to Wells College. Seven Lakes Girl Scout Council serves over 12,000 girls in 13 counties. The council's sole focus is to meet the unique needs of girls from diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
