Newark BOE discusses capital project A review of maintenance and renovation items to be included in a proposed capital project was conducted last night by the Newark School Board. The work session was a second review of computer hook-ups, painting, lockers, ceiling work and cafeteria renovations. Items no longer being considered are stadium bleacher upgrades, expansion of press box and concession stand, and other non-state-aidable items. Discussion was held as to whether certain items were aesthetic or "dollar wise." Board member David Honness feels that if this type of project won't be repeated in 15 years, then those items will take on greater importantance. All agreed that areas that are used year-round, and areas that contain computer equipment need to be air-conditioned. The board looked at a proposed traffic pattern at Lincoln Elementary that would separate parent and bus traffic. The latest plan for Perkins School calls for keeping the bus loop as is and creating a parent drop-off loop in front of the West Maple Ave. school. A proposal for a (parent) drive-thru at the west end of the Miller Street school has been dropped, because of space and safety concerns. The board also agrees that basement areas in the middle school are not suitable for instructional use. The Kelley School, slated to be grades 6-8, would undergo a major change in traffic flow, as would the high school. A lengthy discussion was held as to the best location for the district offices. These offices are now located on the fourth floor of the Newark Municipal Building in leased space. Opinions vary as to whether the district offices need to be close to student activity (classrooms), or be away from campuses. People need privacy when they meet with the superintendent, for example. Portable classrooms: Board President Dave Howard asked Thomas Associates to provide "footage" numbers, so the board can inform the public about possible elimination of portable classrooms.
