County budget gets unanimous ok The Wayne County Board of Supervisors gave the nod last night to the 1999 budget that will take the average tax rate down 30 cents. The 15 supervisors okayed the $85.9 million spending plan, and reduced the amount needed from property taxes by $3,390,076, using surplus funds. Only Williamson Supervisor Mary Ann Bliek voted against this move. That lowered the average rate from a projected $7.94 to $7.64 per $1,000 assessed value. (The 1998 rate was also at $7.94.) Director of Real Property Bob Diener said we could expect to see tax rates for individual towns early next week. Only one person spoke at the public hearing - Harold Herman of East Palmyra questioned why the county had added Animal Abuse Control Officers to the county payroll. He suggested that the investigations could be done by Sheriff's Deputies. County Administrator Dan Kane explained to Herman that the three officers work only part-time for an annual fee of $3,000 (each), and that the day-to-day enforcement will continue to be done by deputies and other local police agencies.
