NHS Varsity Basketball
The Newark High School basketball team will rebuild after losing eight key players to graduation in June. Ron Ceravolo will rely heavily on seniors Jason Sloane and Josh Herman to carry much of the load. Sloane is considered one of the top play makers in the Section, and Herman is one of the best leapers. Ceravolo said, "It's going to take awhile for the inexperienced varsity players to understand the intensity and hard work that it takes to win at this level. Any early success that we experience will have to come from Jason Sloane and Josh Herman. They will have to supply the court leadership necessary to survive in the rugged Finger Lakes East." The Pal-Mac Red Raiders are in their league this year, and the league should be more balanced and more competitive than ever. Ceravolo expects the Geneva Panthers to have the best starting five this year in the league with Canandaigua, Palmyra- Macedon and Marcus Whitman being competitive. Key Newark varsity players include seniors Rich Fernandez and Justin Whyte; senior Shawn Oakleaf did not play last year but, at 6'5" provides the inside presence the Reds badly need. Juniors are Eddie Miranda, Dan Buck, Bryan Hurdle, Brent Burgess, Luke Baker, Eric Decker, Ryan Kuperus. Newark finished 22-1 last season, losing 63-47 in the Class BB Sectional final to Batavia. Newark is the defending Finger Lakes East Champion.
