Booster club officials Dennis Lewis and Becky Wahl presented the Varsity swim team a new power rack system to help in their training. The training device was purchased with funds raised by the Booster club and the Newark school district. Seniors Allison Wahl and Kristin Cattieu presented members of the squad with special gifts. The seniors also presented the coaches with team plaques. "It was a tremendously successful season," said Ted VanDuyne. "Tom DeYoung and I pushed this squad harder and much more than any other group of girls in our program." Newark's hard work paid off with an 8-4 record. "Last year we finished with the same record, but this year we defeated some quality teams," the coach said. "I honestly believe this is the best Newark swim team we have ever had," said DeYoung. VanDuyne noted that the Reds did an oustanding job of handling their success. The winner of the Coaches Award is Jody Flannery. "She sacrificed herself throughout the year for the benefit of the team," said VanDuyne. Martha Clark was chosen Most Promising Freshman. The Most Improved swimmer is Gina Byers, and the Swimmer of the Year award went to Allison Wahl. "She has meant a lot to our team and has been the heart and soul of our team for many years," said the coach. The Reds head coach praised seniors Kristin Cattieu and Allison Wahl for their commitment and loyalty to the program. He praised eighth grader Shannon Lewis for her accomplishments. She is the first Newark girl ever to participate in the State Swim Meet. Lewis placed 17th overall in the 100 relay event at States. Copyright © 1998 |
