will open next week
By John Zornow

The Newark Village board learned last night that the East Avenue Canal bridge will be open next week.

Sergio Esteban of LaBella Associates said the steel decking is now in place, and that only a few items remain for a tentative opening. Discussion followed as to a formal dedication of the bridge in co-operation with Veterans groups. The official name of the bridge is to be The Newark Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Mayor Fred Pirelli also said that Joe Esposito had phoned him. Esposito, one of the people who planned to open an adult entertainment club in the village, said they have dropped their plans to pursue the venture.

A presentation was made by Clark-Patterson Associates to show the board what was to be accomplished with a proposed G.I.S. mapping system that Clark-Patterson has been hired to install for Newark's water, sewer, and cemetery records. G.I.S. (Geographic Information System) is computer software that ties in databases, and has the capability of extending to all utilities, property, and even 911 applications.

Skating Facility? - Mayor Fred Pirelli unveiled a plan to build a skating facility at the Frey Street Park area. Pirelli presented a model plan from the City of Santee, California. Several local skating/skateboard enthusiasts were at the meeting to view the Santee plan and specifications.

Pirelli said the critical issue for such a facility to be built in Newark, would be liability. The Mayor said that the California State Legislature has passed a law limiting municipal liability in these cases. If Senator Mike Nozzolio and Assemblyman Bob Oaks are able to get similar legislation passed, then state funding would be sought to help pay for the facility. This project would also be subject to referendum by local taxpayers and residents.

Municipal Board Chairman James San Angelo reported to the board that a three-year project, the north section water line, is complete. The Municipal Board is negotiating with Phelps for a long-term water purchase agreement.

Traffic Signs to Change: The board voted to approve the changing of a YIELD sign to a STOP sign at the intersection of VanBuren and Clinton Street.

A three-way stop sign at the intersection of East Avenue and VanBuren St. will be changed to a two-way STOP. This change should have a positive effect on the flow of traffic at rush hours to and from IEC, which is Newark's largest employer.

Other village items:

* Wayne Health and Fitness Center was given site plan approval to locate in the Industrial Park.

* Highway Manager Jim Sadler given approval to proceed with purchase of new plow truck for anticipated 1999 delivery.

* Explored possible sites for a portable ice skating rink for use this winter.

* Announced an all day open house for retiring Code Enforcement Officer Chuck Ackerman to be held December 30 from 9-4 at the village offices.
