This morning, Newark Highway Manager Jim Sadler drove the first vehicle over the
rebuilt bridge on East Avenue.
Village Trustee Norm VanDemortel 'christened' the span, which will now be known as the
Veterans Memorial Bridge.
After Norm whacked the structure with a bottle of champagne, Village Clerk Mike
Tonovitz poured another bottle into the waiting cups of the workmen. (With temperatures
hovering around 10 to 12 degrees this morning, a hot toddy might have been more fitting.)
The bridge is the second to open in Newark within the past month. The new Clinton
Street bridge, which also spans the Erie Canal, is just east.
