Haruko AkenukiRotary welcomes
teen from Takamatsu

Newark Rotary Club's Youth Exchange Program student is Haruko Akenuki of Takamatsu, Japan.

Haruko is 17 and will live with host families during the time that she is in Newark. The hosts will include Shirley Kem, Elaine and Lyle Bean; one other family is needed for later in the year. For information, call Dawson Raymo.

At home, Haruko lives with her father, mother, and sister, age 21. Her town, Takamatsu, has a population of 11,000 and is located on the sea. The area industries are fibers and grape growing. Her father is an engineer and her mother a social worker.

Having indicated that the problems facing Japan are not much different than the problems that confront this country, Haruko is anxious to get a look at the rest of the United States.

Aside from tennis, Haruko is interested in Japanese history and plans to talk to area residents about the tradition of the Japanese Tea Ceremony.
