Pictured are two people who are key to the work of the Newark Food Closet - Shirley Kem and Ray Baker. Ray, a member of the Newark First Baptist Church, assumes the coordinator's job of the Newark Food Closet on January 1. Shirley Kem of the Park Presbyterian Church has headed the project for the past year. Kem explained that the food closet is an undertaking of TIC (Together in Christ), and the responsibility rotates through the churches of Newark. A recent drive by the Newark Rotary Club resulted in many bags of various canned goods as well as much-needed cereal. Newark Rotary also raised $377 for TIC to fill the shelves. The food closet is located in the basement of the Newark Municipal Building. It is open five days a week, staffed by volunteers, and serves the needy through referrals by Social Services and the American Red Cross. Copyright © 1998 |
