The Lady Reds varsity basketball team captured their opening round game of the annual Newark Girls Basketball tournament held Monday. The team improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the league by winning their Christmas Tournament held on December 29 at the high school. Newark defeated the Penfield squad 64-57. Newark defeated Bishop Kearney 59-51 in the first game. Newark trailed early 12-11 in the first period and found themselves down 29-21 at halftime. In the third period the Reds heated up outscoring their guest 20-11 taking a 41-40 lead into the fourth period. Newark's fourth period was big as they were 6 of 6 from the foul line and got two 3-pointers from Heather Johnson. Kadi Burgess led the Lady Reds with 18 points followed by Keya Collins with 14, Nicole Milliman with 10, LaTanya Parker with nine and Johnson with eight. On Dec. 29, the Lady Reds raced to an early 19-11 first period lead and held a 30-25 lead at halftime. Newark extended its lead to 45 to 39 going into the final period. Junior foward and forward and Most Valuable player Keya Collins scored five of her 19 points in the final period to seal the win for the Reds. Junior guard Heather Johnson hit one of her three three pointers and scored five of her 13 points in the fourth for the Reds. Johnson joined Collins on the all tourney team. "It was a total team effort," said Coach Diane Abrey. "Keya Collins did an outstanding job for us inside throughout the whole game." LaTanya Parker scored 12 points in the game. Nicole Milliman added 10 and Kadi Burgess six. The girls posted a 65-42 win over the Midlakes Screaming Eagles on Dec. 23. In the third period the Reds came out strong defensively outscoring their guest 24 to 10 in the third to pick up the win. Burgess scored 17 points for the winners with Milliman adding 14 points.
