Newark School board discusses maintenance Members of the Newark School Board, architects, and engineers of the planned Capital Project met Wednesday night to discuss specific budget items as they relate to the building and maintenance project. Board members differed on priorities as to whether individual items enhanced education, safety, or would save energy. The board went over project items that had been left in the budget as well as items that had been cut. Board President Dave Howard discussed his opinion of the importance to upgrade the drainage problems on the athletic fields, citing safety concerns for the students. All line items related to signage were deleted with the feeling that these items could be produced in-house. A $12,000 item for a sound system in the middle school cafeteria was deleted when the board discovered that a system being removed at the Senior High building could be recycled to the Middle school. Appearance items such as stage curtains were brought up as an item to cut, but board members felt that that area had been neglected for too long, with Dave Howard reminding everyone that the Senior High Auditorium is a heavily used community facility. The Board continued to review and restructure the base items and alternatives. The next step is for the Christa Corp. to repackage and review the bid documents in preparation for the bidding process, which is expected to begin around February 19. Copyright © 1998 |
