Reds win league crown

Brian StraitThe Newark High School basketball team captured its 17th league championship (in 27 years) with a 67-58 win over the Mynderse Academy Blue Devils on February 6 at Seneca Falls. Reds coach Ron Ceravolo was at home fighting off the effects of influenza.

The Reds' crown came as a result of a team effort. Brian Strait scored 10 of his game high 16 points in the crucial forth period to ice the win. He is pictured here in a WSFW radio interview that followed the game.

Newark (17-0 overall and 13-0 in the Finger Lakes East) are currently ranked number four in the Class B state poll.

In the second period the Reds continued to play well, leading 26-14 with four minutes remaining. The Reds held a 32-22 halftime edge. In the third quarter Newark extended their lead to 45-31 on a Tanner Webb three pointer. Newark held a 47-39 lead going into the final period.

The Reds were whistled for 26 personal fouls; four of their guards were in foul trouble. Newark also had a tough time handling the basketball through the first three quarters, turning the ball over 20 times. The Reds' tough defense allowed Mynderse just 16 field goals and  38 percent shooting from the field. Newark out rebounded Mynderse 37-18 on the night.

Strait added eight rebounds to his 16 points with Josh Jinks adding eight points and five rebounds, Josh Herman 10 points and four boards. Newark can clinch the number one seed if they win their final three games of the year.

Coach Bob Havrilla and Jay Lauer were both commended for their efforts.
