Aquinas nips Reds 54-53

Lady Reds varsity basketball teamThe Lady Reds varsity basketball team lost a heartbreaker on Monday to the Aquinas Little Irish. The Irish took an early 15-11 first period lead and held a slim 24-22 lead at the half. April Allen had six first-half points with Nicole Milliman scoring five.

Newark came out firing in the third period, outscoring Aquinas 18-8 to take a 40-32 advantage heading into the final period.

In the fourth period the Reds went cold; Aquinas bounced back to tie the game at 42 all with 4:37 remaining. Late in the fourth, freshman Kadi Burgess hit three straight jumpers to give Newark a slim 48-45 lead with 2:22 left in the game.

The Reds' last lead of the game came with just 27 seconds remaining. Senior Colleen Johnson hit a 3-pointer, making it 53-52 Newark. Aquinas would not give up. Rachel Mance, a sophomore, took an offensive rebound and put it in the basket.

LaTanya Parker drove to the basket as time ran out but could not get a shot off. Parker led the Reds with 10 points, followed by Keya Collins, Allen and Burgess with eight points apiece.
