NHS girls basketball

Sarah Archunde, Aurea Espada, Colleen JohnsonThe Lady Reds (seeded #9) defeated Brighton (#8) on Wednesday, 67-48. Hot shooters were Kadi Burgess with 26 points, LaTanya Parker, 20 and April Allen, 12.

The girls dropped a tough 62-57 decision to the Penn Yan Mustangs on February 18 at home. It was Senior Night - Sarah Archunde, Aurea Espada, Colleen Johnson (pictured) and their parents were honored before the game.

The Lady Mustangs held a 21-17 first-period lead. They started pulling away in the second quarter taking a commanding 39-29 halftime lead.

Sara Jensen led a balanced attack for the Mustangs. She scored 13 points with Sarah Popper adding 12 ten of those in the first half. LaTanya Parker scored a game high 20 points for the Reds with April Allen and Nicole Milliman Nicole Milliman(pictured) scoring ten points each. Newark dropped to 7-13 overall and 5-11 in the league.

The jayvee girls ended the season with a close 35-32 win over the Mustangs. Newark raced to an early 11-5 first period lead and held a 17-5 edge with just four minutes remaining in the first half. Newark would lead 23-10 at halftime. The Mustangs outscored Newark 22-12 in the second half to make the game close.

Lindsey Burgess scored ten points, with Jody Lanse adding eight including two 3-pointers. Margo Breisch scored nine points. Rachel Prong added four. Newark finished the year with a 9-9 record.
