Starkenburg named Good Citizen

Jill StarkenburgJill S. Starkenburg, a senior at Newark School District is the recipient of the Colonel William Prescott Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship award.

According to the program's criteria, students selected as DAR Good Citizens must display the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism to an outstanding degree. To be eligible for the state and national DAR scholarships that will also be announced later this year, award candidates must also submit a 500 word essay for DAR review.

Starkenburg has combined her strong commitment to academics and service projects. One of them was an outreach serving downtown Rochester organizations such as Foodlink, Corpus Christi, and a soup kitchen. She also has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in in various locations such as Georgia, Iowa and Connecticut.

Starkenburg has been actively involved in her church, acting as church secretary and has been involved as a counselor at a summer soccer camp. She also has been actively involved in the varsity soccer team and Student Council at her home school.

Starkenburg plans on attending college at Dordt or Gordon. She is the daughter of Jean & Stan Starkenburg of Palmyra.
