Local volunteers head to icy north In the wake of an ice storm that crippled the northern and north eastern part of New York State, American Red Cross volunteers and staff have been working around the clock with other emergency officials to provide help for thousands of people. The area remains paralyzed by the storm. Because of the severe and on-going nature of this winter storm emergency, there aren't yet accurate damage estimate figures. Figures received so far show that there are over 90 Red Cross shelters open across the state, housing approximately 5600 people. Red Cross Chapters and volunteers around the state have shipped in 5500 cots and blankets. Five emergency response vehicles are also on the scene providing mobile feeding for disaster victims and relief workers as well as delivery of supplies. The disaster, which began January 4, continues to cripple travel in the affected counties and hinder relief efforts. Wayne County Chapter has dispatched three volunteers, Sharon Tyo of Palmyra and Ken and Judy DeKing of Wolcott to the affected area. You can help the storm victims by making a financial contribution to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. You may send your contribution to Wayne County Chapter American Red Cross, 165 East Union Street, Newark, NY 14513 or mail it directly to American Red Cross New York State Donor Center, PO Box 922Z Central Islip, NY 11722. Credit card contributions may be made by calling 800-HELP NOW. Red Cross does not receive government funding for disaster assistance. It is provided without charge, made possible through voluntary donations from the American public.
