Benedict presents woodworking program

Steve Benedict will present an educational program on "The Art of Woodworking" at the January 21 meeting of the Wayne County Col. William Prescott Chapter of the American Revolution,

Benedict is one of a family of artisans who is a native of New York State. He graduated from Adrian College in southeast Michigan, having majored in biochemistry with intent of becoming a doctor of medicine. While in college he worked as a carpenter, which has become his career. His one-man business is Shelter Works; he does repairs, renovations and new construction.

His home and workshop are located at the Mil-Ben-ski Farm in Marbletown, where his parents, a brother and a sister each have their homes on the former Kenneth and Gertrude Rogers Miller farm. Steve and wife, Linda, have two grown daughters. Jody lives at home and is a student at Finger Lakes Community College. Tracey and husband Tracy Parrott are parents of two sets of twins and live in Plattsburgh.

Steve Benedict Interests in camping and boating led Benedict to doing fine wood turning in making kayaks of various designs and paddles. (Steve is pictured here demonstrating a frame-and-skin kayak he built in 1997.) Also, on his lathe, he makes bowls and small wood sculptures, samples of which will be available for sale at the program.

The public is invited to attend the program at 1 p.m. The Wayne County DAR Chapter House is at 119 High St., Newark.

Benedict will attend the noon luncheon held for members and invited guests. Hostesses are: Mary Beadle of Sodus, chairperson Shirley Finewood of Newark, Florence Wilkins of East Palmyra, and Joanne Grayson of Williamson.
