Newark Chamber briefs

The Newark Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors met for lunch today at the Quality Inn.

The guest speaker was Newark Police Chief Dick Bogan. The Chamber Board is trying to stay in close contact with the police department, to share community/businessperson concerns. Bogan spoke about crime patterns, stolen vehicles, blanket enforcement of overnight parking. He said the former Roosevelt School crossing guard has been reassigned to the intersection of Blossom Road at Peirson Avenue. The crossing guards report to the police chief.

Soon there will be work done at the Middle School on West Miller Street: sidewalks and steps will be replaced. Eight feet of sidewalk will be eliminated to make room for a pull-over area for parents dropping off and picking up students.

Bogan has been with Newark Police Dept. for 22 years, five of them as Police Chief. He has 19 full-time sworn officers and two civilian officers, the crossing guards and dog warden under his watch.

The new President of IEC, David Fradin, spoke about the quality of life in this village. IEC employs about 1400 people. David and Mary Fradin reside in Newark, but few other managers have relocated to Newark, according to Fradin. He is hoping that the Chamber will form a committee to find out what Newark should/must do to attract business managers and officers. He said the community center is a "plus" but the negatives include no YMCA, and a canal which needs more improvements and beautification to keep up with canal towns like Pittsford.

A press conference is planned for Friday at the Quality Inn to tell about the new collegiate baseball team which will play at Colburn Park.

In mid-May, the Chamber will have all Welome to Newark signs refurbished and repainted; some business owners will receive letters telling them to redo their signs. The Welcome sign in East Newark "has been in a swamp for 20 years." This sign will be refurbished and installed nearer to Colburn Park.

On behalf of Newarkfest, Anton Dotschkal gave the Chamber a check for $2000. He announced that Jack Dubler will return as Newarkfest treasurer, following a year's absence. The Newarkfest planning committee met Wednesday evening at the Chamber office.
