Firefighters help victims of ice storm

Bill Burgess & Doug VelteTwo Newark firefighters left their families and jobs, to go up North and help victims of the ice storm.

Public Information Officer Richard Colacino said that Captain Doug Velte, and firefighter William Burgess left this morning for the devastated Watertown area. Chief James J. Colacino was asked along with other fire chiefs from Wayne County if they would have available any personnel and equipment to send if needed.

Fire Coordinator Rick Bond accompanied about 25 people and trucks from Newark, Lincoln, Macedon, Macedon Center, Ontario, Red Creek and Walworth Fire Departments to the Watertown area.

The Wayne County convoy was to depart around 6 a.m. Velte and Burgess took Newark's newly renovated fire utility truck to the scene.

P.I.O. Colacino stated that equipment such as generators, portable lighting, gas pumps, hoses, chain saws, ropes, and equipment from the Marbletown Fire Department were being sent.

Chief Colacino commended both Velte and Burgess for leaving their families and taking time off work for this mission.
