Students in Kent Snyder's technology classes were busy in December with a number of projects, one of which will help a number of second grade students.

Newark's Lincoln Elementary School students produced wooden musical instruments that were decorated by Stephanie Tandle's and Wendy Chiasson's second grade students.

Students worked together to create musical themes and songs that celebrate individual expression and group similarities. They also helped decorate and played simple instruments built by the high school students.

On January 13, an 'assembly production' line of students, adults, and high school students, put the final touches on the table harps. At that time, the metal pegs were inserted and the wire strung to prepare for playing.

Their goal was to provide an intensive arts experience beyond the students' regular school curriculum and school day, connecting with the NY State Standards in the Arts.

Working with Bobbi Clifford, the district's Arts-In Education Coordinator, the committee developed a year-long program which impacts every second grade student in one of four art disciplines. Artists in the areas of creative writing, drama, music and creative movement worked with the committee and second grade teachers to develop a consistent and sequential Program revolving around the theme of "Our Uniqueness."
