County briefs
By Donna Comella

County legislators held their first regularly scheduled meeting of the new year on Tuesday. Three new supervisors were elected in November - Dom Bartucca of Arcadia, Nelson Werner of Macedon and Frank Guelli of Walworth. Bartucca was absent.

At Tuesday's meeting, the Board:

  • Gave approval of the 1998 highway construction projects. In Arcadia, that includes 1.2 miles of Austin Rd. for a cost of $150,000. Only Supervisor Louis DeLisio (Galen) voted against the plan.
  • Amended authorization for a computer system project for the Wayne Behavioral Health Network. The amended resolution adds $6200 to the $165,901 project for travel and lodging of the technician who will install the system at the county's Mental Health Department. Supervisor Jim Fabino (Lyons) voted no.
  • Had authorized over $800,000 to purchase highway equipment, computer equipment/software, and a Ford F-150 pick-up, before debating the purchase of a $400 fax machine. The request was for the Children with Special Needs Program, and the motion almost died for want of a second. So the matter could at least be discussed, a second was finally heard from Supervisor Roy Herrmann (Ontario). Supervisors were told that the machine would increase communication with representatives in the field and also keep certain communications confidential. Carm Pascarella (Rose) said he couldn't believe that with all the money that had already been spent, there was such a debate over $400. Ultimately, supervisors voted to refer the matter back to the Health Committee. Voting against the referral: Pascarella, and Health Committee Chair, Frank Guelli.
  • Authorized 1998 funding to the Western Finger Lakes Solid Waste Management Authority in the amount of $295,560.
  • Authorized the sale of some abandoned railroad property in Marion to Laverne Bliek for a purchase price of $500.
  • Advanced $5000 for preliminary plans of the water line connection from the Village of Lyons to the Route 31 County Complex. Supervisor Dave Lyon (Palmyra), a member of the Wayne County Water and Sewer Authority, abstained.
