Braves win in NHS pool

The Newark swim team dropped a 55-47 decision to the Canandaigua Braves on January 23 at home.

Newark swimmersSwimmers Paul Scarpati, Tim DeRuyter, Russ Van Tyle and Ben Williams perform the national anthem at the final home swim meet of 1998.

Newark (3-6 overall and 2-5 in the league) won seven of 12 events. Tom Alberts placed first in the 200 freestyle event (1:58.47) and the 100 freestyle event (:50.85). He also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team with Ben Compton, Rick Nichols, Brendan Morrissey at 1:46.25. The same foursome also won the 400 freestyle relay event (3:36.18).

Other Reds victories: Rick Nichols in the 50 free (:22.75); Paul Scarpati in diving with 156.25 points; Morrissey in the 500 freestyle event (5:57.6).

Second place: Nichols in the 100 butterfly; 200 freestyle relay with Ben Williams, Scarpati, Russell VanTyle, and Travis Bean; Compton in the 100 backstroke; Morrissey in the 100 breaststroke.

Third place:

200 medley relay squad of Williams, Bean, Scarpati, and Adam Bald; Compton in the 200 IM; Bean in the 100 butterfly.

Fourth place:

Jason Whitbeck in the 200 freestyle, Bean in the 200 individual medley, Scarpati in 50 free, Bald in the diving, Tim DeRuyter in the 500 free, the 200 freestyle relay team of Bald, Jim Mooney, Whitbeck and DeRuyter; Williams in the 100 backstroke; Newark swimmersBald in the 100 breaststroke; 400 free relay team of VanTyle, Mooney, Whitbeck and DeRuyter.

Swim team seniors are Paul Scarpati, Tom Alberts, Ben Compton and Brendan Morrissey. They were honored on January 23.
