Sodus students visit the zoo
By Melissa White

fun at zooAs a special year-end treat, Sodus first grade classes went on a fun field trip to the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester. The children and their chaperones were broken into groups with tour guides. Our group was called 'Harris's Herd.' When we heard the words 'Harris's Herd,' we knew it was time to move to the next site.

We got the opportunity to see the two new giraffes, Dusty and Dillon, who have been rented from another zoo for a while. Our tour guide told us how curious the giraffes are. As the men were working on their area, one giraffe kept peeking over the side at them.

The Zoo has a new baby Spider Monkey who was born on June l5. They also have a baby Gibbon. When animals come into the zoo, they come from other zoos, not from the wild. The newcomer stays at the veterinary hospital for one month to be sure he is healthy and will not spread diseases to the other animals.

elephantsWe learned many things on our visit to the Zoo. The children had a great time on their tours. Everyone met with their classrooms for lunch and then it was off to the buses and back to Sodus. Mrs. Manning gave her class little notebooks and pencils to take notes as they went through.

DID YOU KNOW?

When the keeper plays with the sea lions and seals, he is really checking them over at the same time to be sure they are all right.

Seals have weak flippers and have trouble walking on land after being in the water.

The Seneca Park Zoo will be opening a new section in the year 2000 or 2001. The Asian Forest will include Tigers, Red Pandas and the Snow Leopards.

The male Snow Owls are completely white, while the females have darker colors.

The Seneca Park Zoo has grown a lot in the past year. There are more exhibits and more picnic areas. It is educational for the children to see the animals in their habitats. If you're looking for something fun to do with the kids this summer, or any time of the year, visit the Seneca Park Zoo. You'll have fun, too. Go early in the day because, with the growth of the Zoo, there are many more visitors and fewer places to park.

The zoo is located on 2222 St. Paul St. and is open daily 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. For more info, call 7l6-342-2744.
