The Newark Girl Scouts ended the year with their annual Camping Trip to Camp Yaiwano. The theme was Hawaiian, with games, grass skirts, volcanoes, and a real luau and a campfire with songs and skits. The leaders sang the Gilligan's Island theme song, dressed like Gilligan, the Skipper, the Professor, Mary Ann, Ginger, and Mr. and Mrs. Howell, characters from the old TV show. (Pictured are Lorrie Sorensen and Nancy Ross as the Howells.) The girls earned a Hawaiian patch for completing several requirements including: learning Hawaiian words, games, making a working volcano, and having a luau. The annual camping trip is always a great way to end the year. The troops arrive on Friday evening, spend Saturday doing a lot of fun things, and go home Sunday morning. The troops held a Court of Awards ceremony at the Newark High School in June. The leaders gave the girls their patches and pins, etc. Each level performed a song on stage, and three girls received the Silver Award, the second highest award in available in Girl Scouting. (See June stories.) If your daughter is interested in joining us in September, or if you are interested in becoming an Adult Volunteer, call Cindy at 597-2739. There is a $7 registration fee (financial assistance is available). Copyright © 1998 |
