detective update

By Melissa White

My children and I went to the special storytime designed just for detectives. First, our boss, Mrs. Gravelle, taught all the detectives the special Solve It Song - a special song only sung at these meetings.

There were mysterious stories and puzzles to solve. As a Super Sleuth, you must look for the smallest of clues to solve your cases. Sergeant (Mrs.) Gravelle had a special flannel board story, in which the first clue looked like something that it was not. What a mystery! It was indeed clever, but experienced detectives such as ourselves could figure it out right away. It is tough to fool a professional. (Well, maybe we were fooled, but just for a little while.)

And if that was not enough of a test of our problem-solving abilities, she asked many difficult riddles. See if your parents can answer these:

  • With this particular item, you throw away the outside, cook the inside, eat the outside, then throw away the inside what a riddle.

The  answer is corn on the cob.

  • If a man is in Williamson, why can't he be buried in Rochester?

Answer ...because he is alive.

Did you know them without looking at the answers? (I didn't, but don't tell anyone, I have a reputation to maintain.)

The last of the clever puzzles was...a King and Queen had three sons. They needed to know which son would be king. They told the sons they had a certain amount of time to fill an empty room. The first filled it with rocks..no good. The second filled it with feathers...nope. The third lit a candle and filled the entire room with light. (Clever little guy. Do you think he's a detective, too?)

Until the next report, remember to keep your eyes open and your magnifying glass fingerprint free. (Windex works very well...a hint from one detective to another.)
