Raptors win 3 of 4 over weekend

The Newark Raptors rode the three-hit pitching of Doug Gibson and Saxon Berry to defeat the Geneva Knights 3-1 at Friday night's opener.

Damian Stambersky led the Raptor attack with a double and a single, and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. Darin Kinsolving and Nick Perlozzo added two hits each for Newark.

Geneva (0-2) was led by Chris Villano's two hits. Ryan Victor (0-1) took the loss for the Knights, surrendering 10 hits and three runs.

Stambersky and Kinsolving each hit doubles. Gibson was the winning pitcher, before 650 fans.

On Saturday, Newark used strong pitching to gain a Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League victory.

Derek Pines scattered three hits over seven innings as Newark downed the Rome Indians 3-2. Brady Ballard scored on a single by Perlozzo in the sixth inning to lead 3-0; and the Raptors withstood a two-run eighth for the final margin. Ballard led the Raptor bats with two singles and added two stolen bases. Billy Dunn also had a stolen base. Attendance was 238.

Newark had a twinbill under gray skies at Colburn on Sunday. Corey Byrd held the Rome Indians to two hits over seven innings and Eron Bennett was two-for-four as the Newark Raptors won the first game 3-0. The game was shortened to seven innings under league rules. Byrd walked one and struck out four as the Raptors moved to 3-0 on the season. Alex Marconi had a stolen base.

Newark pitchers have allowed just one earned run in 25 innings this season. Larry Papuga and Craig Kerner had the only hits for Rome.

In game two, the Indians used an eight-run first inning and handed the Raptors their first loss of the season, 11-2. Rome used four singles and six walks to build the commanding lead. Nick Spera led the Indians attack with a two-for-five game with three runs and two stolen bases. Craig Kerner and Joe Beichert contributed two hits for Rome (1-3).

Ray Goirigolzarri, the Raptors' second baseman, had two hits, including a double.
