Raising $ for veterans' grave markers

The Marion American Legion and its Auxiliary will be hosting a Roast Beef Dinner on Friday, June 19 at the post home on Witherden Road. The dinner is being held to raise money to purchase grave markers for our area's deceased veterans in the Marion Cemetery.

Marion Memorial American Legion, its Auxiliary, Juniors and Sons of the American Legion members placed over 450 American flags on veteran's graves for Memorial Day this year at the cemetery. Unit 1430 Historian, Nancy Nevelizer, informed the membership that over 175 grave markers are still needed at the cemetery.

She has spent several hours researching, locating and putting together a list of the veterans names who are buried at the Marion Cemetery. Cost of the grave markers is over $1,000. Members are hoping that the upcoming dinner will help defray the cost of the grave markers. Their goal is to have all the Veterans' grave markers in place for the 1999 Memorial Day observance.

The Roast Beef dinner will be offered from 5 till 8 p.m. Adults cost $6, Senior Citizens are $5, and children under 10 $3.50 (under 5 are free). Donations towards the grave markers will be gladly accepted.
