Petrus resigns from Newark schools

Newark's Work Experience Coordinator, Mike Petrus Jr., has resigned from the school district effective July 17.

Named 1997 Educator of the Year by the Newark Chamber of Commerce, he began teaching in the Newark District in 1986. Since 1993, he has overseen the Work Experience Program for all students.

The Clyde resident will take a new post at Marcus-Whitman. Petrus said earlier this week, that the Marcus-Whitman Work Experience program "is in the initial stages" of creation. He believes that the district's new program can be built into a model and example for the entire state, and sees his new position as a challenge.

Petrus is a Past President of the Newark Chamber, a past president of the Clyde Chamber, the current president of the Newark Lions Club, a member of the Clyde Board of Education, and a member of the New York State Chapter of the National Association of Partners in Education.

He has spearheaded local efforts for the Wayne County Quality of Life Coalition and the return of Junior Achievement to the Newark District.
