Sodus students visit the Post Office
By Melissa White

Mrs. Manning's first graders have been reading the story called The Letter by Arnold Lobel. The class drew names and wrote letters to each other. Then, recently, the class and a group of adults went for a walk to the Sodus Post Office. Each student had money to purchase a stamp for their postcards.

post office tripOn the trip to the Post Office, the class was accompanied by Dixie, faithful companion dog to student, Sarina.

Once at the Post Office, Postmaster Mr. Nail showed the students around. He showed them the different boxes the mail goes into, he patiently sold each child their stamp for their postcard and adults showed the children which box to drop it into.

After the postcards were mailed, Mr.Nail showed the students how the postcards go through a machine to get sorted. He explained that there are two types of mailings - City Mail Delivery and Rural Mail Delivery. He told the children the differences between the two types of mail carriers and that Sodus has two city routes and four rural routes. Mr. Nail also showed the students where different types of mail go and how they are sorted.

Afterward, Mr. Nail gave the students pencils. On the way back to school, the students had a picnic in Mrs. Manning's friend's shady backyard. When everyone was finished with lunch, they continued their hike back to school.

Once back in the classroom, they spoke about the things they had seen and what they had learned. Dixie fell asleep in front of the school by a shady bush.
