Sodus kids hatch chicks
By Melissa White

chicksBefore school's end, Mrs. Maier's first grade class in Sodus had quite an exciting experience. Mrs. Maier got some chicken eggs from Jim Pecora in Macedon. The PTSA provided the class with a new incubator and Mr. Bastian let them borrow a chicken palace he had made. Mrs. Maier's class had chicks last year, too, but because of a faulty incubator, only two hatched.

During the wait, the children candled the eggs to see the chicks' movement, and, every second or third day, the students would turn the eggs. On the wall, Mrs. Maier had pictures of the stages the baby chicks would go through and the children could compare their chicks' progress with the diagrams.

The chicks came a day earlier then expected and the children had the opportunity of watching all of them hatch. It was a great learning experience and fun to watch.

Mrs. Maier's students then sent out invitations for other classrooms to visit the new chicks. The class was thrilled that every egg hatched. There are eleven in all and the children named each one.

The chicks have homes to go to, as well. One student, Holly, will be taking a few home and Mrs. Adams, who has been taking Mrs. Maier's classroom chicks home for years, will be taking others. Mr. Bastian's kindergarten class is one of the many classes who have come to visit the chicks. Soon, they will be hatching chicks in their own classroom.

The chicks names are: Hershey, Feather, Brain, Domino, Lucky, Sunny, Digger, Hopper, Daisy, Sunflower, Peep and Marshmallow.
