Silver Award

Three Cadette Girl Scouts from the Newark service Unit of the Seven Lakes Girl Scout Council have achieved the Silver Award, the second highest award available in Girl Scouting.

The Girl Scout Silver Award may be earned by Cadettes, ages 11-14. The requirements take about two years to complete and cover five major activities. Each recipient must have spent at least 25 hours in a leadership capacity - she may have served as a troop officer, a program assistant in a younger troop, or developed leadership skills through work on a special interest project.

She has to complete at least three interest projects developing new skills. Exploring careers and completing community service projects are also required. As the final activity, there is a Girl Scout Award project in which the girls use all they have learned in the first four requirements.

Christina, daughter of Cheryl Morse of Newark, and Jeni Seavert, daughter of John and Cindy Seavert of East Palmyra, worked together to plan and carry out a Summer Fun Day for all Newark Girl Scouts, held in May at Perkins Park. They planned picnic races, an obstacle course, and water games.

Jadwiga, daughter of Mary McClellan and Mieczyslaw Biskupska of Newark, planned and carried out the Court of Awards Ceremony, held at Newark High School, where all 250 Newark Girl Scouts received their patches from their leaders. Afterwards, everyone met in the cafeteria for cookies and punch.

The girls' leaders are Wendy Hill, Cindy Seavert and Cheryl Morse.

The Seven Lakes Girl Scout Council is a United Way Agency serving girls in 13 counties of the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier region of New York and Northern Tier of Pennsylvania.
