Nichols breaks swim records

Rich Nichols & Coach AmyotNewark High sophomore Rick Nichols swam to a new Section 5 Class B record and broke his own school record in the 100 freestyle at the New York State Swim Championships at West Point Academy last weekend. He is pictured with Coach Amyot.

On Saturday in the prelims, Nichols swam 48.48 and slipped into an 8th place tie with David Sudan of Long Beach of Section 8. With the top 8 going to the finals, Nichols and Sudan had to swim-off for the final spot for Sunday's Championship final. Nichols swam 47.86 to Sudans 48.45 to earn the final berth.

On Sunday Nichols swam 47.99, defeating both Jason Blumer of Weedsport and Eric Hoffman of Fairport to earn 5th place in New York State.

The boys Varsity team is coached by Katie Amyot and assisted by Corey Cox Hartman.

Section 5 scored a state meet record 812 points and won by a record margin of 435 points. It was the fourth straight title fo Section 5.
