Ames stores celebrate 40th

Ames Department Stores nationwide are celebrating a 40th anniversary.

joyce parker/bruce neilsenOn March 13, 1958, Ames had its first grand opening at the former site of the Ames Worsted Textile Company mill in Southbridge, Massachusetts.

The Newark Ames, which employes 46 people, held a birthday party last weekend.

Store Manager Bruce Nielson is pictured here with employee Joyce Parker, who has been with the store for 32 years.

The birthday party on Saturday included cake, coffee and the large birthday card.

Nicole Young, 10, is pictured signing her name at the Newark store.
nicole youngNielson said, "Every store is looking for 400 signatures with hopes of getting a total of 120,000 signatures."

The local store is in Newark Plaza, located in what was originally Neisner's, and later the Big N.
