Newark's quest for a 10th Sectional title fell short on March 6 as they were defeated in the Class BB Section V finals 63-47. A crowd of over 5000 was there, as the 22-0 Reds looked for the first Sectional title since 1991. The Batavia Blue Devils, on the other hand, were gunning for their first title ever. Certainly Batavia was the better team that night and deserved to be the Class BB champion," said coach Ron Ceravolo.
"We knew going into the game that their athleticism would give us some match up problems but we did not realize that would make seven of 13 three-point shots," said the Reds coach. "Every time we made a run and cut the lead to four or five points, Batavia would respond with a three-point basket," said Ceravolo. The Reds trailed 42-24 going into the final period. Newark was outscored 21-13 in the final period and Batavia finished the game with a 10-2 run. Cheerleaders JoAnn Lester, Meghan Shoemaker and Jamie Ippolito in a group hug.
Tanner Webb led the Reds with 11 points followed by Luke Peters with nine and Josh Herman with seven points. Webb, Peters and Brian Strait were named to the All Tournament Team.
